Matthias Schaller was born in Dillingen (Germany) in 1965. He lives in Venice, Italy and New York City, USA. He studied Cultural Anthropology in Hamburg, Göttingen and Siena. Schaller received the Ci Art Award 2004. Selected solo shows include Purple Desk at the Fondazione Cini (Biennale of Arts, Venice 2009), Fratelli d'Italia at the Museum of Modern Art (Rio de Janeiro, 2009), Das Meisterstück at Picasso Museum (Münster, 2010), Disportraits at the Museum of Contemporary Arts (Rio de Janeiro, 2011). His monographs The Mill (2007), Controfacciata (2008) and Purple Desk (2009) have been published by Steidl. In 2011, Steidl will also publish an anthology about his work from 2000 - 2010 (introduction and interview by/with Germano Celant).

Recent News: Matthias Schaller is one of 60 international artists selected to participate in an exhibition to celebrate Pope Benedict XVI's 60th anniversary as an ordained priest. All 60 works in the exhibition have been presented to the Pope as a gift on the occasion of his anniversary.
The exhibition, titled "The Splendor of Truth, Beauty of Charity," was opened by the Pope on 4th July. It is on view in the Paul VI auditorium in the Vatican until 4th September.
